Community Advisory Committee Addresses Building Capacity

October 7, 2026 – Over the next few months, a group of parents, staff and community members will provide input to shape the future of Amarillo ISD. This Community Advisory Committee is charged with developing a plan to raise school building utilization to 80 percent by the 2029-2030 school year. Current utilization is at 74.5 percent, but enrollment is projected to drop by approximately 3,000 students over the next five years, which means campus utilization across the district will likely decrease to near 63 percent. We’ll share updates on the committee’s progress as they continue meeting this fall.
At a recent committee meeting, we asked committee members, “What’s your why?”
“I want to do what we can to have AISD succeed. My wife has been a part of the district for almost 30 years. I also think our relationship with Kids, Inc. goes hand in hand. I think we just want the best and most successful school system for our community.”
– Craig Wilfong, Community Member
“I'm serving because of what happened to my grandson's paternal community school legacy. It closed after he only got to go to Kindergarten. Was told right before Christmas. Sad! I want to contribute the human aspect to decisions like this, for persons making this decision to understand the full impact of huge decisions.”
– Hope McCoy, Grandparent
“I want to learn more about my community. I also want to be part of the solution. I want to listen, and I want to be heard.”
– Craig Gualtiere, Community Member
