Seen and Heard at the December 2023 School Board Meeting

December 11, 2023 — The Board celebrated AISD’s score of 100 and a “Superior” rating on the 2023 Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) Annual Management Report, which assigns ratings to school districts based on their financial health and performance. A “Superior” achievement is the highest rating given in the FIRST system.

The meeting continued with a fentanyl awareness presentation given by Counseling Director Tracey Morman. Under the recent passing of House Bill 3908, also known as Tucker’s Law, schools are required to annually provide research-based instruction related to fentanyl abuse prevention and drug poisoning awareness to students in grades 6 - 12. Following the presentation, Trustees approved it to be presented to AISD students.

The Board approved the 2024-2025 official school calendar as recommended by the Districtwide Educational Advisory Council, which also serves as the District’s Calendar Committee. Next year, school will begin on August 15, 2024 and will end on May 23, 2025. The calendar includes a 2-week break for students and staff at Christmas and student/staff holidays on September 2 (Labor Day) and April 18 (Good Friday), in addition to an entire week at Thanksgiving (Nov. 25 - 29), and Spring Break, March 10 - 14. The 2024-2025 calendar provides for 173 instructional days and meets all requirements for the number of minutes in a school year. The calendar also provides for 187 teacher contractual days.

In other business, the Board approved the purchase of six activity travel buses for a total of $2,487,834, to begin replacing the District’s existing fleet of nine motor coach buses that have reached the end of their life cycle.  Some of the current motor coaches have logged more than a million miles.

Finally, the Board acknowledged and thanked those who gave gifts and donations to various schools this month. A total of $52,651.62 worth of donations were given from Plains Dairy, The Amarillo Symphony, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Whatabrands LLC, Diversified, Amy Rea Insurance Agency, Jaime’s Flooring, Tony and Janice Young, Arbor Care, Reserve at 47, Fast Restoration, A-Town Lawn Care Solutions, Whataburger, Autonation, Cali Brewer, Amarillo Area Corvette Club Inc., Coronado PTA, David Weir, Woodlands PTO, Atmos Energy, and Trinity Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.  For the 2023 calendar year, a total of $332,538.07 has been given to AISD schools by our generous community!
