Amarillo ISD has been working to determine the right approach to activities that students and families look forward to at the end of a typical school year, including commencement ceremonies and prom. We want to thank parents, students, staff and the community for their patience and flexibility as we work to come up with plans to celebrate students in an appropriate way that honors their hard work and achievements.
The following dates and important information outline our plans at this time. Please remember, all events are dependent on social distancing guidelines and restrictions that may be in place.
Graduation and Prom
Because of continued social distancing orders and rules prohibiting large group gatherings, graduation ceremonies originally scheduled for May 22 and 23 have been postponed. As our state and city slowly reopen, we hope to be able to host the traditional, in-person ceremonies at the Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum or at Dick Bivins Stadium in July, but only if it is safe to do so.
In the meantime, we will begin celebrating the Class of 2020 with the following activities. For all of these activities, we will make sure to have social distancing measures in place.
July 24-August 1 - Opportunity for Traditional, Face-to-face Graduation
Tentative dates have been reserved with the Amarillo Civic Center as well as Dick Bivins Stadium. If we are able to host indoor or outdoor ceremonies in July, again assuming stay-at-home orders and social distancing guidelines would allow, the dates we have reserved are July 24 through August 1. Proms would be conducted in the evening at the individual high schools on these same dates if possible. We will make every effort to let families know by July 15th whether we can have graduation in July.
Virtual, Video-taped Graduation Ceremonies
AISD is creating a special virtual graduation video for each high school. The video will incorporate most of the elements of the traditional ceremony, such as special music, valedictorian and salutatorian speeches, class gift presentations and the pre-recorded video of each graduate receiving his or her diploma. The virtual ceremonies will be widely broadcast and distributed so that graduates, families and the community can bring some closure to the school year by sharing in this important milestone.
