Shawn “Doc” Urton Presented with District’s Highest Employee Honor

May 29, 2024 – Amarillo ISD Athletic Trainer Shawn “Doc” Urton is the winner of the 2024 Bob Ashworth Award for Outstanding Service. The award was presented to Urton at the District’s annual Service Recognition banquet in May.

Urton has been the Head Athletic Trainer at Caprock High School for 30 years. In addition to teaching sports medicine classes and overseeing the student athletic trainer program, Urton’s care includes injury prevention, emergency care, therapeutic interventions, rehabilitation, and maintaining accurate health records for all sports.

“At every game when a student-athlete was injured on the court or field, Doc Urton was there to help the injured,” reads one of the testimonials nominating Urton for the Ashworth Award. “There are times when the athlete that he was helping was not even a student at Caprock, but of the opposing team to which he treated them with the same care and concern as he does for all students,” the nomination continues.

For more than 30 years, the Bob Ashworth Award has been given annually to one AISD employee with an outstanding career of service to students and staff. The award is named in honor of Ashworth, who served as superintendent of AISD from 1958 to 1978. Along with a plaque and a monetary award, Urton’s portrait will hang outside the boardroom of the Rod Schroder Education Support Center.

Retiring employees were also honored at the banquet. This year’s retirees celebrated a combined total of 2,246 years of service.
