December 3, 2024 — The December Board meeting began with a report from Superintendent Doug Loomis, who identified eight schools on the watchlist for potential consolidation. The schools that meet the District’s criteria of having fewer than 300 students include Park Hills Elementary at 174 students, Sunrise at 196, Pleasant Valley at 197, Allen 6th Grade Campus at 210, Landergin Elementary at 260, Travis 6th Grade Campus at 275, Lamar Elementary at 279, and Hamlet at 281. Superintendent Loomis announced that proposed school pairings will be presented at a Special Board meeting on December 16, where the Board will have the opportunity to discuss and decide whether to take action on consolidating any of the campuses. Mr. Loomis assured that no job losses are anticipated, and while some positions may shift, employees will remain with the District.
The Board approved the renewal of property and boiler and equipment insurance, with a total annual premium of $3,564,941, reflecting a decrease from the previous year. The Board also cast votes for the Potter-Randall County Appraisal District Board of Directors.
The Amarillo ISD Transportation Facility’s employee and bus parking lots require repairs and renovation. The Board selected J Shehan Engineering as the project’s engineering firm for the pavement renovation, a positive step toward improving the facility.
In other business, Trustees approved Stellus Rx, LLC as the top provider for Pharmacy Care Management services. With 10% of employees on the District’s health plan managing chronic illnesses, this service will help pharmacists collaborate with healthcare providers to evaluate prescription needs and costs, ultimately reducing expenses for the District’s self-funded health plan.
The Board reviewed committee assignments and made the following changes: Trustee Powell will replace Trustee Brown on the Audit Committee, and the Community and Governmental Affairs Committee was reactivated with Trustees Beilue, Brown, and Powell appointed to serve.
Finally, the Board expressed appreciation for gifts and donations totaling $16,000, given to various schools from Natalie Woods, Renea Fike, Chrissy’s Cleaning Services LLC, Owens Corning, Texas Roadhouse, Top of Texas Orthopedics PLLC, Access Community Credit Union, United Supermarkets, Ridgecrest PTO, Amarillo High Wrestling Booster Club, Yolanda Touchon and Lissette Bonner, Ann and Roland Romo, Easy Stop Storage and Storage Stop and No Boundaries International.
