AISD Recognizes School Board Members in January

January 8, 2025 – January marks School Board Recognition Month, and Amarillo ISD proudly joins over 1,200 public school districts across Texas in honoring the hard work and dedication of their school board members. These individuals are pivotal in shaping the future of education for students throughout the district.

"The work of a school board is essential, but it’s the partnership between the board, our educators, and our families that truly drive success in our schools," said Superintendent Doug Loomis. “Leading and overseeing a district with a $330 million annual budget, over 4,100 employees, and nearly 29,500 students is no small feat. Yet, our trustees meet this challenge head-on.”

The theme for this year’s School Board Recognition Month is Leadership for Tomorrow’s Texas, which showcases a school board’s commitment to creating meaningful educational experiences and opportunities that prepare students for college, careers, and beyond. Serving as a school board member is a non-paid, public servant position, with trustees serving as the largest group of locally-elected officials in the state of Texas.

The members elected to serve Amarillo ISD’s Board of Trustees are: Doyle Corder (Board President), Kayla Mendez (Board Vice President), Jon Mark Beilue, Connie Brown, David Nance, Don Powell, and Steve Trafton.

Trustees are not only present at countless athletic, fine arts, and academic events, but they also make regular visits to campuses to engage with students, staff, and community members. In addition, they actively participate in board meetings, workshops, and training sessions. To learn more about running for a position on the AISD School Board, visit here. “Our School Board has recently faced some incredibly tough decisions, and this recognition is a way to extend our appreciation for their commitment to the future success of both Amarillo ISD and the community,” Lommis added. “At the end of the day, every decision made by our school has one clear objective: to ensure that our students receive the best educational experience possible and graduate prepared for life and success beyond high school.”
