Amarillo High Team Competes at National Science Bowl

April 21, 2025 – After winning the Pantex Regional Science Bowl in February, a team from Amarillo High School will compete among 64 regional teams in the prestigious National Science Bowl on Sunday, April 27 in Washington, D.C.

Representing Amarillo High School are students Jason Vo, Lance Dykhouse, Finn Archer, Jayden Zheng and David German-Kavle. The team is coached by teachers Jarred Nusz and Katie Hack.

Each year, the Science Bowl welcomes students eager to challenge themselves and compete as part of a dynamic academic team. Interested participants begin the journey by attending practice sessions, where they engage in quiz-style drills and receive guidance on what subjects to study.

To qualify, students take a rigorous oral examination in various scientific disciplines. Each question is read only once, requiring students to remain attentive and think quickly. Scores are recorded for each subject area as well as overall performance. Based on these results, three teams are formed. Selected students demonstrate exceptional dedication, practicing together on Thursdays and Fridays after school, as well as meeting independently to further prepare.

“Their commitment reflects a strong passion for STEM and a shared goal of academic excellence,” Nusz said. “The National Science Bowl is more than just a science competition. It's one of the most respected academic challenges for middle and high school students across the country.”

The top two middle and high school teams will win $5,000 for their schools’ math and science departments and others placed in the top 16 teams will each win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments.
