May 7, 2025 – A happenstance placement in a floral design class changed everything for Caprock’s Camille Hernandez.
“My freshman year, I started on the health science pathway, but I figured out really quickly that I did not like it whatsoever,” says an emphatic Camille.
The opportunity to make a nuanced switch put Camille on a career path she’d never imagined.
“I ended up changing my endorsement from health science to plant science. I love telling people about it because they’re like, ‘I have never heard an 18-year-old girl say I want to major in horticulture,’” laughs Camille.
Now a senior, Camille has earned the Level 1 Floral Design Certification from the Texas State Florists’ Association and designs floral arrangements for many school events.
“We do the Superintendent’s Scholars program, homecoming, prom, which is really fun, the Top 2% banquet. I love it when I hear people talk about the pretty flowers. I just think, oh my goodness, I did that. It warms my heart because I like people to know I’m so passionate about it,” says Camille.
In the fall, Camille plans to begin working on an associate’s degree in horticulture at Amarillo College and eventually transfer to West Texas A&M University, majoring in agribusiness and economics. She hopes to one day become a wholesale florist.
Everything, it seems, is indeed coming up roses for Camille.
“There are endless opportunities here. I’ve had so many teachers who helped me become who I am today,” she says. “I’m blessed to be a part of a family and culture where I feel accepted. I’ve never walked into this school and felt like I did not want to be here. My family, we’re ride or die for this school.”
