Seen and Heard at the August 2017 School Board Meeting

August 14, 2017 -- At the August School Board meeting, the Board heard a presentation from Amarillo Area Foundation president Clay Stribling about proposed plans to expand the ACE program.  Superintendent Dana West also gave the Board an update on the continuing work of a Board and staff committee to explore a neighborhood school concept for the North Heights area of Amarillo.     

The Board adopted an order calling for a $100,000,000 bond election on November 7, 2017.  In recent months, the Board has held a series of meetings with staff regarding a comprehensive facilities study related to aging school buildings.  Originally estimated at a cost of more than $300 million, the Board pared down the list of renovation and modernization needs to the most critical.  A citizen’s committee, appointed by the Board to review the proposed list of items to be addressed by the bond, will report their findings by September 15.  See news release for more information.

In other business, trustees set the 2017 tax rate at $1.189 per $100 of taxable value, which is the same tax rate as last year.  The Board also approved an agreement with Lavin Architects to complete the design phase of renovations to the exterior of Bowie Middle School to better compliment the new Bowie 6th Grade Campus across the street.  The estimated construction cost for the project is $500,000.

The Board approved revised plans to construct a ‘sports complex’ at Caprock High School, to include a tennis center, an artificial turf field to be used for soccer and other activities, bleachers, sidewalks, and a new parking lot.  Trustees also approved an agreement with Shiver Megert & Associates, architects, to design a renovation project at the Rod Schroder Education Support Center to better accommodate public access and add a secured entrance to the building. 

Finally, trustees accepted gifts and donations totaling $11,639, given to Amarillo High School and Crockett Middle School from the Amarillo High Cheerleading Booster Club and Autism United.
