April 14, 2020—Amarillo ISD families will now receive multiple meals on Friday meal pickups in order to feed their children throughout the weekend, the District announced today.
Beginning Friday, April 17, when families report to one of AISD’s 16 schools serving curbside meals, they will receive three lunches and three breakfasts per student. Friday’s meal service will include breakfast for Saturday, Sunday and Monday, as well as lunch for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Families who participate in the Snack Pak 4 Kids program will also receive their weekend Snack Paks.
AISD began offering breakfast and lunch free to students via a curbside pick-up service in March. The expansion to provide weekend meals further helps families at a time when they are feeling a heavier financial burden from the continued closure of many workplaces and schools in response to the coronavirus.
“We know a lot of our students are food vulnerable right now, and especially on weekends. This is a way to ensure that families who are taking advantage of the weekday program can also feel reassured that their children will have food throughout the weekend,” said Amarillo ISD Child Nutrition Director Matt Buck.
AISD is currently providing about 13,000 curbside meals to students each weekday. With the expansion of weekend meals, Buck expects the District will hand out 36,000 to 39,000 meals during the Friday service.
The times and locations for curbside meals can be found on the COVID-19 page of AISD’s website. Meals are free to AISD students 18 and younger. In order to follow social distancing and group gathering restrictions, AISD offers meal service in a "curbside/drive-up" method. If children are not present in the vehicle when picking up meals, parents are asked to provide some kind of documentation from the school showing each child attends an AISD school.
