AISD Accountability Score Ranks Top 10 in Texas

August 31, 2022 – The state’s new accountability rating for Amarillo ISD puts the District in the top 10 academically among the largest school districts in Texas.

The District received an overall grade of 89, or B+, according to accountability scores released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in August. A deep dive into data shows just how strong that score is when compared to other large school districts. AISD’s 89 puts the District 7th out of the state’s 44 largest school districts. These 44 school districts make up approximately 42% of all students in the state. AISD moves up to 4th when compared with districts with a similar percentage of economically disadvantaged students.

Accountability scores are how the state evaluates its public school districts. The rating is based on performance on the state-mandated STAAR test, graduation rates and college, career and military readiness outcomes. Overall, AISD saw across-the-board gains in STAAR scores where many other school districts in the region and state did not. The results indicate AISD students recovered from learning losses associated with COVID and moved ahead of where the District was pre-pandemic.

“We’re the largest and most complex school district in the area, yet our students meet and beat expectations set for them by the state, even despite a challenging few years. What that says about our students and teachers is they are tough and they are resilient,” said Superintendent Doug Loomis.

Amarillo ISD Accountability Highlights:

  • Amarillo ISD students made gains on 18 out of 20 grade level, subject area tests. In the remaining two, District scores stayed the same. In fact, AISD is the only school district in the local area to not see a decline in any of the testing categories compared to the previous year. This means AISD students met more performance benchmarks than in previous years and are better prepared to be successful at the next level.

  • AISD 4th graders outperformed the region and state in reading and math, advancing 15 points in reading and 10 points in math in just one year. AISD high school students beat the state average in 3 out of 5 end-of-course tests, and 7th and 8th graders grew by 10 points year over year in reading.
