February 16, 2015 –The School Board received a report on construction progress of the two new 6th grade campuses – one for Bowie Middle School and one for Travis Middle School – that are part of the 2013 bond program. Both 6th grade schools are well underway and are on target to be complete by August 2015. Bowie 6th Grade is expected to house 425 students, Travis 6th Grade will house 375 students. The design of both campuses will incorporate "problem-based learning," an instructional strategy which allows students to learn about a subject through inquiry and problem-solving.
In action items, trustees approved a contract with the National Math and Science Initiative for professional development for teachers who teach pre-AP (Advanced Placement) classes. The Board also authorized the district to recycle old, out-of-date textbooks, but asked that options for giving the books to parents and students who might want them be exhausted first.
The Board also approved an order for an election for new Board members on May 9, 2015. Three positions on the seven-member School Board are up for re-election.
Finally, the Board tabled action to select a third party administrator, pharmacy benefits manager and reinsurance provider for the district’s medical insurance plan. A special Board meeting will be scheduled so the Board can further discuss this item before taking a vote.
