Groundbreaking for Travis 6th Grade Campus

June 19, 2014 – The groundbreaking ceremony for Travis 6^th Grade Campus was held Thursday, June 19 at 2801 NE 24^th, just north of Travis Middle School. The Travis 6^th Grade Campus is being built to relieve overcrowding at Travis Middle School and to create a better environment for student learning at both campuses. Travis Middle School will only house 7^th and 8^th grades once the 6^th grade campus is open.

“We are fortunate the voters of Amarillo ISD supported the needs of our students in this community,” School Board President Jim Austin said. “The new campuses will not only alleviate overcrowding at two of our largest middle schools, but research suggests that the addition of these 6^th grade campuses will provide a better learning environment for the kids.”

Voters gave approval for the 6^th grade campuses for Bowie and Travis middle schools in the May 2013 bond election. Together, the two 6^th grade campuses will cost approximately $28.6 million to build and furnish.

“The Travis 6th Grade Campus will provide a safe and unique learning space, bridging elementary to the older middle school years, allowing greater intellectual and emotional growth at an important transition point in these students' lives, as well as expanding learning space for the 7th and 8th grades at Travis Middle School,” School Board Member Anette Carlisle said.

Dekker, Parich, Sabatini worked with a committee comprised of principals, program directors, cluster directors and others to design the 6^th grade campus. The committee studied trends in educational environments and the program needs at each campus while planning the schools. Western Builders is the general contractor working the project.
