December 18, 2017 -- The public was given the opportunity to comment on the District’s Annual Performance Report (APR) for 2017. The APR includes the Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) regarding District performance for the 2016-2017 school year. The APR also includes the Financial Standard Report, the Violent or Criminal Incidents Report, the Texas Higher Education Report, and a reporting of the District’s accreditation status, which is ‘Accredited’. Superintendent Dana West reported that all schools ‘met standard’ in terms of academic performance for the 2016-2017 school year. A copy of the complete report is available in the AISD Office of Federal Programs and Grants, and it will also be posted on the District’s website.
Dr. West and the Board recognized students Karime Gomez of Palo Duro and Brooklyn Kennedy of Amarillo High as winners of the Texas Art Education Association’s prestigious Gold Seal Award. Superintendent West also discussed the recent District purchase of the former Hastings warehouse building on Plains Blvd. She said a very preliminary plan for the building includes a vision for an innovative academic program or academy for high school students that would focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and coding.
The Board adopted the District calendar for 2018-2019. Next year’s calendar is very similar to this year’s. The school year will start on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, and end on Friday, May 24, 2019. The Board approved design plans for both the new sports complex on the Caprock High School campus and the exterior renovation project at Bowie Middle School. They also adopted an order authorizing the issuance of the first round of bonds from the November 2017 bond election.
In other business, trustees authorized the Board president to appoint a special Board committee to assist with oversight of bond/construction projects. Mr. Austin, Mr. Flow and Mr. Blanchard will serve on the committee. Trustees also heard a report from Chief Operations Officer Brent Hoover, who said the November 2017 bond projects will follow a very aggressive timeline with a targeted completion time of 3 ½ - 4 years.
Trustees accepted gifts and donations totaling $6,560, given to various schools this month from the Valle Family, the Corvette Club of Amarillo, Mr. Stan Moore, Sandy Whitlow, Mr. Dan Dudley with Dantech Systems, Roland and Roberta Lackey, the Texas Book Festival, Susan Sanborn, Amarillo Association of Realtors, Amarillo National Bank, and the Amarillo VA Hospital.
