Glenwood Elementary Earns Lighthouse Designation

August 28, 2018—Glenwood Elementary School has been named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School by Franklin Covey Co. following a four-year process implemented by the school to turn scholars into 21st-century leaders. This designation has been earned by fewer than 400 schools nationwide.

The Leader in Me is a leadership model developed in partnership with educators. It teaches students the skills and talents they need to be successful in the 21st century. Staff and school administrators work from the inside out, starting with a premise that every child has unique skills and the ability to be a leader. This idea is incorporated into existing school programs and curricula for the students to experience, ultimately shaping them into leaders of the future. Principals who apply this model to their schools report an increase in student leadership and overall performance.

“We are so proud of being named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School,” said Glenwood Principal Holly Holder. “For the last four years, our teachers and students have gone through intensive and ongoing training to change the way we think about leadership. We have changed our paradigms to see the genius in every person, and you can see those changes in everything we do. Our students, staff and families are empowered to lead at school and in their lives outside of school.”

The Lighthouse milestone is a highly regarded standard set within the program that is attainable by all Leader in Me schools. Achieving this goal is evidence of outstanding results a school has produced from the program.

“While we love the recognition of being a Lighthouse school, we didn’t focus on becoming a Lighthouse school for the recognition, but for our students. One of our Lighthouse reviewers said, ‘You all are changing the lives of your students in ways you can’t even see’—which is why we all became educators to begin with,” said Holder.

Glenwood is AISD’s second campus to earn the Lighthouse designation. Tradewind Elementary became a Lighthouse school in 2016. There are currently only 365 Lighthouse schools in the United States.
