Trustees Appoint Veteran Educator as Interim Superintendent

October 1, 2018—The Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees has appointed veteran educator Doug Loomis to serve as Interim Superintendent following the retirement of Dr. Dana West.

Board President Scott Flow believes the interim appointment is an opportunity to continue the District’s long-held belief of supporting teachers in their fundamental role to prepare students for life and success beyond high school.

“Academic achievement in our District has improved year over year, and our students generally outperform their peers across the state. With that academic momentum and with the first bond projects improving school facilities set to begin soon, AISD is in a strong position as an organization,” Flow said. “We are confident Mr. Loomis will effectively lead us in the interim by continuing to move the District forward.”

Loomis began his career in AISD 31 years ago as a teacher at Wolflin Elementary. He has since worked in every cluster at every level in the District. For the past five years, Loomis has served as the District’s Chief Human Resources Officer.

“My years of working on the campus level taught me that the best way to achieve results is to allow professional educators, our teachers and principals, to do their critical work in the classroom. As an administrator, I view it as my job to find ways to support them,” Loomis explained.

AISD announced Dr. West’s retirement last week and trustees made the decision to appoint Loomis as the Interim Superintendent during a special board meeting. The appointment is effective immediately.
