March 27, 2019—The Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees named veteran educator Doug Loomis Superintendent of the District. Loomis began his career in AISD more than 30 years ago as a teacher at Wolflin Elementary.
“I started here in AISD fresh out of college as an elementary teacher. I met my wife, a fellow elementary school teacher, here. We raised our son and daughter in the schools here. This District is intertwined in the fabric that makes up my family and some of the best years of my life,” Loomis explained. “I’m honored to have the opportunity to be here leading this great district forward and working on behalf of the students and teachers.”
In his career, Loomis has since worked in every cluster at every level in the District. For the past five years, he has served as the District’s Chief Human Resources Officer.
The AISD School Board appointed Loomis to serve as the Interim Superintendent last fall. In January, Trustees voted to open the Superintendent vacancy to internal applicants. Interviews were conducted, and the board named Loomis the lone finalist for the position. State law requires a 21-day waiting period before Trustees could make the appointment final.
