Schools must provide daily on-campus instruction and record attendance for students while following TEA’s public health procedures. Per Texas Education Code (TEC), §25.092, students must attend 90% of the days a course is offered (with some exceptions) in order to be awarded credit for the course and/or to be promoted to the next grade. This requirement remains in force during the 2020-21 school year.

Note: Students opting into instruction both in-person and virtually must be engaged in daily learning to be counted present.

Technology devices such as Chromebooks will be distributed by a student’s home campus. AISD will help students and parents learn to use the devices by providing Chromebook training opportunities near the beginning of the school year. Additionally, the District will work to have a catalogue of video trainings that all stakeholders can access through the AISD website. Virtual teachers and professional staff will also work to help students navigate through the virtual learning platform.

Note: Due to an influx in orders nationwide, district issued Chromebooks may not be delivered until October. Until they arrive, students may need to provide their own device to opt-in to virtual learning. The district will work to prioritize our current store of devices for check out to students who opt-in to virtual learning and do not have access to a device.

IMPORTANT: For meal information during Summer 2021, please view the Summer 2021 Breakfast & Lunch information in the first section, above.

AISD provides meals for all of our students, whether they are learning in-person or virtually. For those receiving virtual instruction, meals will be available at their home campus every day between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Breakfast and Lunch can be picked up together at the same time. These meals will be served via a “grab and go” system. Grab and go meals will generally be the same meals as those served in the cafeteria, though some items may be different to maintain quality and food safety.

Additionally, the student will not have to be present to receive a meal. Parents/legal guardians may pick up meals for students as long as they present a document that proves the student is enrolled at AISD. Examples of approved documentation include: an official letter from the school/district stating that the student is enrolled for the 2020/2021 school year; a current student ID; progress report; etc.

As Of Monday, November 2, 2020, All AISD Students Can Receive Free Breakfast and Lunch From Their Home Campus
Amarillo ISD will begin providing free meals to all students, regardless of income, for the remainder of the school year. Starting Monday, November 2, students, both on campus and practicing remote learning, can receive a free breakfast and lunch from their home campus.

Students on campus will be served during breakfast and lunch times, while those students participating in class remotely can pick up a breakfast and lunch meal Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. while school is in session. Meals will not be provided on snow days or holidays. Locations for remote pick-up are specific for each school, but will generally be available at cafeteria loading docks.

Parents who wish to pick up meals without their children present must provide physical or digital documentation that their child is a student at Amarillo ISD. Accepted documentation includes: progress report, school library card, a school enrollment letter and/or communication from the Food Service Department, such as an email. Parents will be asked to provide this documentation every time they pick up meals.

While no additional paperwork or documentation is required for students to pick up their own meals, students are asked to go through the cash register as a way to continue tracking food allergies.

Additionally, 10 schools in the District are also providing free meals to any child in the community under 18, even if they aren’t a student with AISD. From 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, community members can pick up breakfast and lunch from Austin Middle School, Caprock High School, Eastridge, Emerson, Humphrey’s Highland, Ridgecrest, Rogers, San Jacinto, South Lawn and Wills Elementary.

If the child is not from AISD, the child must be present when parents pick up a meal.

Please Complete The Free and Reduced-Priced Meals Application
Despite the free lunches, families are still asked to continue filling out meal applications to help secure funding for other programs, maintain accountability, etc.

Funding for this program comes from the United States Department of Agriculture and the Texas Department of Agriculture which allows schools to continue summer eating programs throughout the end of the school year.

Parents should still submit a free and reduced-price meals application for this school year to help provide an accurate picture of the needs of AISD families. Additionally, families who do qualify this year are eligible to receive benefits for the first 30 days of the 2021-2022 school year.

To complete an application, visit http://chartwellsk12.compass-usa.com/amarilloisd. For help completing an application or if you have any additional questions, contact AISD’s child nutrition office at 806-326-1263.
