Transportation

Special transportation shall be provided for eligible students in accordance with state guidelines. The ARD Committee must discuss and determine transportation as a related service and document need.  This would include transportation required for access to any Career and Technology Program, Vocational Adjustment Program, Disciplinary Alternative Placement, or Community Job Exploration Training.  If the ARD committee determines transportation is necessary for educational benefit, campus personnel will complete the transportation information form and send it to the Director of Transportation.

Daily Operating Guidelines:

  • "Door to door" service means that the bus personnel are responsible for students from the door of the home to the door of the school building (if there are safety hazards that don't allow bus personnel to go to the door of the home, such as a dog, etc. -- then the bus personnel will assume responsibility for the student outside the gate or fence).
  • The transportation department will work with parents as much as possible in finding a mutually agreeable pickup and delivery time, but parents cannot mandate a set time for pickup or delivery. The district is required to keep the amount of time that a student with special education needs is on a bus to be commensurate with the length of time that general education students are on a bus.
  • Students are expected to adhere to the Bus Riders' Rules and Regulations found in the Student Handbook.
  • Parents are informed on a yearly basis of the guidelines set out by the transportation department.
  • Transportation personnel make bus removal recommendations to the building principal and the building principal and/or an appropriate ARD committee make the final decisions concerning bus removals.

Procedures for Private Transportation Contract

Prior to entering into a private transportation contract, all of the following must be met:

  • An ARD has stated the need for the related service of transportation
  • The student is unable to utilize the specialized transportation system that AISD can provide.
  • The special education department, campus and parent all agree that a private contract is the best method of providing transportation from home to school and/or from school to home.

If the above has been met, then the following steps will be followed:

  • The diagnostician will contact the special education secretary to obtain the mileage between home and school.
  • The special education secretary will contact the transportation system used by AISD for the mileage and report it back to the diagnostician.
  • The diagnostician will complete the contract.  This includes writing the mileage on the contract.
  • The parent and AISD administrator will sign the contract.
  • A copy of the signed contract will be given to the parent.
  • A copy of the signed contract will be sent to the special education secretary.

Cost per mile is based on the current Internal Revenue Service rate.  Mileage is based on the shortest route between school and home address. The mileage will be determined by the transportation system used by AISD.

At the end of each six weeks grading period, the secretary of the special education department will verify the child's attendance and current address entered into the district's student information system and will initiate a check request to the parent based on the number of days the student was present, mileage and current IRS rate per mile.
